One year on from Hurricane Katrina, California Reflects on Statewide Efforts to Support the Gulf Coast

The Governor signed General Order 2005-01 deploying more than 800 National Guard troops to support relief efforts underway in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

  • In addition to the troops on the ground restoring security and providing humanitarian relief, more than 200 troops supported the effort from California.
  • Forces in Louisiana included security, communications, logistics, medical, aviation, and special operations personnel.
  • Much of the California National Guard Force was on the ground within 36 hours

In addition to manpower, the California National Guard provided vital equipment and logistics support.

  • The California National Guard sent a command and control package that was on the ground in New Orleans within 12 hours of the governor's order.
  • The California National Guard provided four sophisticated communications platforms - Incident Commander's Command, Control and Communications Unit (IC4U's) that were crucial to the relief effort.
  • While California National Guardsmen were being transported by air, a ground convoy set out to deliver more than 70 vehicles necessary to support military operations.
  • The California Guard airlifted over 200 tons of supplies and equipment, and more than 1,000 personnel from numerous state agencies including: Governor's Office of Emergency Services, the California Highway Patrol, and a number of swift water rescue teams to the disaster area.
